## Overview

A VRAM tier is a budget of bytes. Whether a model fits is the weight estimate or the published file size, plus KV cache, plus an assumed 1 to 2 GB of overhead, compared with that budget. The formula is on [[llm-quantization-explained]].

What can you run with 16GB of VRAM?

Cards at 16 GB on pages read 2026-10-12: the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is sold as 16 GB GDDR6 or 8 GB GDDR6, and the Radeon RX 9070 XT is 16 GB GDDR6. See [[best-gpu-for-local-llm]] for power and interface.

Qwen2.5-14B at Q4_K_M is 8.9935 decimal GB of weights. KV at 4,096 tokens is 0.8053 GB. Plus the 1 to 2 GB assumption: 10.7988 to 11.7988 GB, which is under 16 GB. At 32,768 tokens the KV term is 6.4425 GB, so the total is 16.4359 GB plus overhead, which is over 16 GB.

Qwen2.5-14B at Q8_0 is 15.6202 GB of weights before KV. That is under 16 GB and leaves less than 1 GB, so the 4,096-token KV term (0.8053 GB) already passes 16 GB before overhead.

Qwen2.5-32B at Q4_K_M is 19.8835 GB of weights, which is over 16 GB before KV.

Is 24GB of VRAM enough for local LLMs?

24 GB cards on the fetched vendor pages: GeForce RTX 3090 (24 GB GDDR6X), GeForce RTX 4090 (24 GB GDDR6X), and Radeon RX 7900 XTX (24 GB GDDR6). The RTX 5090 is 32 GB, not 24 GB. Comparison of the three NVIDIA cards is [[rtx-3090-vs-4090-vs-5090-llm]].

Qwen2.5-32B Q4_K_M weights are 19.8835 GB. KV at 4,096 is 1.0737 GB. Plus 1 to 2 GB assumed overhead: 21.9572 to 22.9572 GB, under 24 GB. At 32,768 tokens KV is 8.5899 GB, and 19.8835 + 8.5899 + 1 = 29.4734 GB, over 24 GB.

Llama 3.1 70B Q4_K_M is a 43.1 GB file in the quantize README. Qwen2.5-72B Q4_K_M weights estimate to 44.4779 GB. Neither fits in 24 GB of VRAM on weights alone. 24 GB is not a 70B Q4_K_M card.

What can you run with 12GB or 8GB of VRAM?

No NVIDIA or AMD page fetched on 2026-10-12 listed a 12 GB card. Intel Arc stayed unknown after HTTP 403. 12 GB below is a byte budget, not a named card.

8 GB cards that are named: GeForce RTX 4060 is 8 GB GDDR6, and the RTX 4060 Ti has an 8 GB GDDR6 option as well as 16 GB.

Qwen2.5-7B Q4_K_M weights are 4.6558 GB. KV at 4,096 is 0.2349 GB. Plus 1 to 2 GB: 5.8907 to 6.8907 GB, under 8 GB. At 32,768 tokens KV is 1.8790 GB, so 4.6558 + 1.8790 + 2 = 8.5348 GB, which is over 8 GB if you take the high end of the overhead assumption.

Qwen2.5-7B Q8_0 weights are 8.0864 GB, already over 8 GB before KV.

The same 7B Q4_K_M line fits a 12 GB budget with more room at 4,096 (5.8907 to 6.8907 GB). Qwen2.5-14B Q4_K_M at 4,096 is 10.7988 to 11.7988 GB including the overhead assumption, under 12 GB at the low end and still under 12 GB at 2 GB of overhead (11.7988). At 32,768 tokens that 14B line is over 16 GB, as calculated above, so it is also over 12 GB.

Is moving up a VRAM tier worth it?

Move up when the next model you want crosses the byte budget, not because a larger card is newer. 8 GB holds the 7.61B Q4_K_M estimate at a short context and does not hold that model's Q8_0 weights. 16 GB holds the 14.7B Q4_K_M estimate at 4,096 tokens and does not hold 32.5B Q4_K_M weights. 24 GB holds the 32.5B Q4_K_M estimate at 4,096 tokens and does not hold a 43.1 GB Llama 3.1 70B Q4_K_M file. The 32 GB RTX 5090 still does not hold that 43.1 GB file. This page does not convert those gaps into a speed ranking.

### Does 24 GB fit Llama 3.1 70B at Q4_K_M?

No. The quantize README lists that file at 43.1 GB, before KV cache.

### Is there a 12 GB card on this page?

Not from the NVIDIA and AMD pages read on 2026-10-12. The 12 GB lines are arithmetic only.
